Our adventure through the Mamma Mia island's historical town begins, crossing the coastal road that leads to Panagitsa Pirgos Church 

(devote to Virgin Mary and located in a fortress). 

We will make a short stop at the church for a break to enjoy the panoramic view of the settlement and the north Aegean. Then we will continue walking inside of the old town of Peparethos city|( that was the island's ancient name) and the Venetian Castle where the ruins are still visible, and you can notice the different phases from ancient years to Venetian domination. 

After passing the castle's steps we will walk inside the traditional settlement of the island and explore the different architectural phases during the centuries.

In the end of our walk we will have the opportunity to taste the local vine Stafylos and try traditional local appetizers.

Itinerary

  • Panagitsa of Pirgos Church

    The Temple of the Virgin Mary Panagitsa of the Tower: It is located NE on the imposing rock that dominates Skopelos, when viewed from the sea. It is a temple belonging to the composite tetra ionic cross type. The iconostasis of the church dates back to the 17th century.
  • Peparethos City

    The ancient name of Skopelos was Peparethos and, historically, its first inhabitants were Cretans from the ancient town of Knossos. It was named after Peparethos, brother of the Cretan leader Staphylus.
  • Venetian Castle of Skopelos

    The castle is located in the ancient village Peparithos, i.e. in the capital (Chora) of Skopelos. It was restored for first time by the Venetians in the 13th century and until today parts of its majestic walls are preserved. The castle is connected with the capital of the island and is visible from every point of it. If one goes up the landings that start from the edge of the harbor in Panagitsa of Pyrgos, will discover the fortress up close and enjoy the breathtaking view.
